Types of Chemical Equilibria

Last Updated on July 3, 2023 By Mrs Shilpi Nagpal

Types Of Chemical Equilibria

1) Homogeneous Equilibria

When in an equilibrium reaction, all the reactants and the products are present in the same phase , it is called homogeneous equilibrium.

Type 1 : In which the number of moles of products is equal to the number of moles of reactants

H2 + I2 sign of equilibrium reaction 2HI

N2 + O2 sign of equilibrium reaction 2NO

CO + H2O sign of equilibrium reaction CO2 + H2

Type 2 : In which the number of moles of products is not equal to the number of moles of reactants

N2 + 3H2 sign of equilibrium reaction   2NH3

2SO2 + O2 sign of equilibrium reaction 2SO3

PCl5 sign of equilibrium reaction PCl3 + Cl2

The reactions in the liquid phase are:

CH3COOH + C2H5OH sign of equilibrium reaction CH3COOC2H5 + H2O

2)Heterogeneous Equilibria

When in an equilibrium reaction, all the reactants and the products are present in two or more than two phases , it is called heterogeneous equilibrium.

CaCO3 ( s ) sign of equilibrium reaction CaO ( s ) + CO2 ( g )

3Fe ( s ) + 4H2O ( g ) sign of equilibrium reaction Fe3O4 (s ) + 4H2 ( g )
