Law of Conservation of Energy

Last Updated on February 16, 2023 By Mrs Shilpi Nagpal

Question 1 Define the law of conservation of energy?

Law of Conservation of Energy

Whenever energy gets transformed, the total energy remains unchanged.

According to this law, energy can only be converted from one form to another, it can neither be created or destroyed. The total energy before and after transformation remains same.

Ball, mass, m, height, h, above the ground

Potential energy = mgh

As ball falls, its potential energy will change into kinetic energy.

As the ball continues to fall, the potential energy would decrease while its kinetic energy will increase.
When the object is about to reach the ground, h=0 and v will be highest.

Therefore the kinetic energy would be largest and potential energy will be least.

Potential energy+ Kinetic energy = constant

The energy of a freely falling ball is conserved.
