Introduction
The chapter recounts the life of Albert Einstein, the greatest scientist of the 20th century. Einstein was considered unusual by his mother. He was highly skilled in mathematics and physics. After graduating in 1900, he worked as a technical expert in 1902 where he assessed other people’s inventions and secretly developed his own ideas. He became world famous after he published his General Theory of Relativity in 1915.He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921. He worked for world peace and democracy in the later years of his life.
Summary
Albert Einstein was born on 14th March 1879 in the city named Ulm in Germany. His mother thought that he was a freak (abnormal) because unlike other children, he had a large head. He was unable to speak even at the age of two and a halt years.
When he started speaking, he spoke everything twice. Einstein did not like the company of friends. His friends called him Brother Boring’ .He played by himself with mechanical toys. At school, he did not do well. Einstein learnt to play the violin at the age of six and later became an amateur violinist.
Einstein went to high school in Munich where his family had moved. He was a good student and scored good marks in every subject. Einstein did not like the strict discipline of the school and often had arguments with his teachers. He left the school at the age of 15 years. His parents shifted to Milan but Einstein continued his schooling in Switzerland. Einstein was extraordinary in mathematics and had an interest in physics. After finishing school, he decided to study at a university in Zurich. Einstein graduated at the age of 21 in the year 1900. At the university in Zurich, Einstein fell in love with a Serbian girl named Mileva Maric. The university in Zurich was one of the few universities in Zurich where women could get degrees. Therefore she had come to Switzerland.
At the age of 21 , Albert Einstein got his university degree. He worked as a teaching assistant and gave private lessons. He got a job as a technical expert in the patent office in Bern in 1902. At the same time, he developed his own ideas secretly. He published his Special Theory of Relativity in 1905, according to which time and distance are not absolute. From this theory, he derived the world’s most famous formula which described the relationship between mass and energy, E = mc2. (where E is energy, m is mass and c is the speed of the light in a vacuum)
Mileva Maric was an intelligent girl. Einstein wanted to marry her but his mother was against it. She thought that Mileva was too old for Einstein. However, Einstein married her in 1903. They had two sons but their marriage failed and they finally got divorced in 1919. Einstein married his cousin Elsa in the same year. Einstein’s new chapter brought him world fame. In 1915, he published his General Theory of Relativity. It gave a new interpretation of gravity. An eclipse of the sun in 1919 proved his theory correct. He became famous as his work was considered as a scientific revolution. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921.
Einstein emigrated (moved) to the United States when the Nazis came to power in 1933. The process of nuclear fission was discovered in Berlin in 1938. The American physicists feared that the Nazis would build an atomic bomb. On 2nd August, 1939 Einstein wrote a letter to the American President, Franklin D. Roosevelt about the massive destruction that can be caused by a single atomic bomb. But his warning was ignored. The Americans developed the atomic bomb secretly and dropped it on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 during the World War II.
Einstein was very upset about the huge destruction caused by the atomic bomb. So, he wrote a long official letter to the United Nations in which he proposed the formation of a world government. But, this did not have any effect. He continued to work tor world peace and democracy and involved himself more in politics in the coming years. He campaigned to end the arms build up. He died in 1955 at the age of 76. He was admired for being a visionary, a world citizen and a scientific genius.
