Question 3 What happen when sodium react with water?

Question 4 What happen when magnesium react with water?

Question 7 What happens when Zinc react with water?

Question 8 What happens when iron react with water?

Reaction of metals with water

When a metal react with water, then a metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas is formed.

Metal + Water ———> Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen

The intensity of reaction of a metal with water depends on its  chemical reactivity.

Some metals react vigorously even with cold water, some react with hot water, some metals react with steam whereas some metals do not react even with steam.

1)Sodium is a very reactive metal, therefore sodium metal react violently even with cold water.

Na + 2 H2O ———-> 2NaOH + H2

2)Magnesium is less reactive metal so it react slowly with cold water,it reacts rapidly only with hot boiling water.

Mg(s) + 2 H20 (l) —–> Mg(OH)2  (aq) + H2 (g)

3)The metals like zinc, iron are less reactive which react slowly even with steam.

Zn (s) + H20 (l) —–> ZnO(s) + H2 (g)

3 Fe (s) + 4 H20 (l) —–> Fe3O4  (s) + 4 H2 (g)

4)The metals like copper, silver and gold are so un reactive that they react with water or even steam.

If Sodium metal is kept exposed to air,it will react with the various component of air and get spoiled.

To prevent its reaction with the moisture and other gases of air, sodium metal is always stored under kerosene.

Reaction of non-metals with water

Sulphur–Non-metal—does not react with water.

Phosphorus is a very reactive non-metal element. If phosphorus is kept open in air,it react with the oxygen of air and catches fire. So,in order to protect phosphorus from atmospheric air,it is stored in a bottle containing water.
