Reaction of metals and non-metals with acid

Last Updated on July 3, 2023 By Mrs Shilpi Nagpal

Question 1 Why should the foodstuffs like orange juice, pickles, chutney should not be kept in iron or aluminum containers?

Question 2 Name the gas evolved when metals react with acid?

Question 3 What happens when magnesium metal react with hydrochloric acid?

Question 4 What happens when zinc metal react with hydrochloric acid?

Question 5 What happens when  iron metal react with hydrochloric acid?

Question 6 What happens when aluminum metal react with hydrochloric acid?

Reaction of metals with acids

Most of the metals react with acids to form salt and hydrogen gas.

Metal + Acid ——–> Salt + Hydrogen

Only the less reactive metals like copper, silver and gold do not react with dilute acids.

Depending on the reactivity, some metals react violently with dilute acids, some metals react rapidly with dilute acids, some metals react with dilute acids only on heating.

1)Magnesium metal react with dilute hydrochloric acid to form magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas.

Mg(s) + + 2 HCl (aq) —–> MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)

2)Al,Fe and Zn metals also react with dilute hydrochloric acid to form corresponding metal chlorides and hydrogen gas.

Al(s) + 6 HCl (aq) —-> AlCl3 (aq) + 3 H2 (g)

Zn(s) + 2 HCl (aq) —-> ZnCl2  (aq) + H2 (g)

Fe (s) + 2 HCl (aq) —-> FeCl2  (aq) + H2 (g)

Hydrogen gas burns with a pop sound when a lightened matchstick is brought near the mouth of test-tube.

The less reactive metals like Cu,Au,Ag do not react with dilute acids.

Copper metal react with hot and concentrated sulphuric acid but no hydrogen gas is produced.

Certain foodstuffs like citrus fruit juices ,pickles,chutney and curd contain acids.When the food stuff containing acids are kept in Fe,Al or Cu containers,the acids present in them react with metal of the container to form toxic salts.These toxic salts can damage our health.

Fe,Al and Cu containers should not be used to store acidic food.

Reaction of Non- metals with acids

They do not react with dilute acids to form salt and hydrogen gas.
