Simile

Simile

A simile is a figure of speech that compares two unlike things using the words ” like” or “as “. The purpose of a simile is to help describe one thing by comparing it to another thing that is perhaps seemingly unrelated.

It is used to describe an item, situation, emotion or action by comparing it to something else in order to make statement more creative and artistic.

Examples                                                                                     

As sweet as honey
Example – Her sister’s baby is as sweet as honey.
As dead as a doornail
Example – I hit that mosquito using my pencil and now it is dead as a doornail. 
As busy as a bee
Example – My mom is always as busy as bee.
As slippery as an eel
Example – She’s as slippery as an eel.
As snug as a bug in a rug
Example – The little boy wrapped himself in a blanket and was as snug as a bug in a rug.
As cute as a kitten
Example – Sunita was as cute as a kitten.
As happy as a clam
Example – She was as happy as a clam when she won the contest.
As bold as brass
Example – Rosy went to the shop, as bold as brass and demanded her money back.
As shiny as a new pin
Example – After Rohit cleaned the house, it was as shiny as a new pin.
As common as dirt
Example – Deaths from Dengue and Malaria are as common as dirt during the rains.
As big as a house
Example – He put on a ton of weight. He’s as big as a house now.
As hot as hell
Example – Summers are usually as hot as hell.
Like a box of chocolate
Example – Life is like a box of chocolates.
As fast as lightning
Example – Rahul ran away as fast as lightning when he saw a cockroach on the table.
As thin as a rail
Example – She has become as thin as a rail in the last two months.
As tough as nails
Example – She is almost 80 years old but she is still as tough as nails.
As white as a ghost
Example – Her face went as white as a ghost when she saw the burglars in her house.
As sweet as sugar
Example – Mona is as sweet as sugar, she is so kind to everyone.
Swims like a dolphin
Example – Anita is so expert that she swims like a dolphin.
As innocent as a dove
Example – John was so well behaved that he was as harmless as dove.
Grows like a weed
Example – He is growing like a weed.
Has a voice like a foghorn
Example – This bell has a voice like a foghorn that can be heard within few kilometers.
Run like the wind
Example – He is very strong in build and he can run like the wind.
Climbs like a monkey
Example – He can climb trees like a monkey.
As wise as an owl
Example – Mrs. Smith is as wise as an owl.
Love is like a rose
Example – Love is a like a rose with thorns.
As brave as lion
Example – Bob is as brave as lion in the fight.
Fight like cats and dogs
Example – My little sisters fight like cats and dogs.
Funny as a barrel of monkeys
Example – Ron was as funny as a barrel of monkeys.
As blind as a bat
Example – Without my glasses I am as blind as a bat.
As clean as a whistle
Example – My house is as clean as a whistle.
As strong as an ox
Example – He is as strong as an ox.
As dry as the Sahara desert
Example – Awful! Pasta was as dry as the Sahara Desert.
As light as feather
Example – Her dress is as light as a feather.
As cool as a cucumber
Example – Her attitude is as cool as a cucumber.
As hard as a nail
Example – He can not be influenced easily as he is as hard as nail.
As sweet as sugar 
Example – Mamta is as sweet as sugar, she is so kind to everyone.
As white as sheet
Example – She was white as a sheet after that near encounter.
As tall as a skyscraper
Example – She is as tall as a skyscrapper.
As sharp as newly chopped wood
Example – The air smelled as sharp as newly chopped wood.
As thin as as rake
Example – Her aunt is as thin as rake.
As proud as peacock
Example – She is as proud as a peacock.
As black as coal
Example – This old factory is as black as coal from inside.
Cunning as a fox
Example – John in my office is as cunning as a fox.
As cold as ice
Example – She was as cold as ice as there were no emotions on her face.
As sharp as a razor
Example – Her wife is as sharp as a razor.
As white as snow
Example – This dog is as white as snow. 
As strong as an ox
Example – My big brother is as strong as an ox.
As hot as hell
Example – It is as hot as hell in peak summer season.
As bright as sun
Example – Her smile is as bright as the Sun.
As tough as leather
Example – My grandmother is as tough as leather, she raised four kids pretty much all on her own.
As clear as crystal
Example – The matter is as clear as crystal now.
As smooth as silk
Example – The cream left my skin as smooth as silk.
As stubborn as mule
Example – My best friend is stubborn as mule.
As silent as the grave
Example – It gets as silent as the grave at night time, and it really creeps me out.
As old as hills
Example – Her grandmother’s love story was as old as the hills.
As straight as an arrow
Example – Naresh is as straight as an arrow.
As innocent as lamb
Example – She looks as innocent as a lamb in that outfit.
As tall as a Giraffe
Example – Basketball players are as tall as giraffe.
As bold as brass
Example – She walked in the stadium as bold as brass and won a medal too.
As dry as a bone
Example – His mouth felt as dry as a bone.
As easy as ABC
Example – Today’s assignment is as easy as ABC.
As pale as death
Example – The old man looked pale as death, and greatly agitated.
As free as a bird
Example – She is as free as bird. She never worries about a thing.
As helpless as baby
Example – He was feeling as helpless as baby in the jungle.
As hungry as a bear
Example – Ravi is as hungry as a bear, he hasn’t eaten anything from yesterday.
As nutty as a fruitcake
Example – John is nutty as a fruitcake if he thinks she can get away with that.
As different as night and day
Example – The twin brothers were as different as night and day.
Slept like a baby
Example – Yesterday, I was so tired that I slept like a baby.
As deep as an ocean
Example – The mother’s love for daughter is as deep as an ocean.
Like an open highway
Example – his heart is like an open highway.
Working like a dog
Example – It has been a hard day’s night and I have been working like a dog.
As innocent as an angel 
Example – She is as innocent as an angel.
Sparkle like diamond
Example – Her eyes were sparkling like diamond.
Dull as the doorknob
Example – Rahul is as dull as a doorknob.
Cheeks like roses
Example – Her cheeks were red like roses.
As slow as tortoise
Example – Rohan works as slow as tortoise.
As explosive as a volcano
Example – His temper was as explosive as a volcano.
As fat as pig
Example – After a heavy lunch, I feel as fat as a pig.
As funny as a clown
Example – Some boys in my class are as funny as clown.
As red as tomato
Example – When she kissed me I turned as red as tomato.
As firm as rock
Example – Our friendship is as firm as a rock.
As greedy as dog
Example – Villain in the movie was as greedy as dog.
As green as grass
Example – If someone is as green as grass, they have little experience or knowledge.
As sticky as glue
Example – The floor was as sticky as glue.
As big as elephant
Example – His mansion was as big as an elephant.
As clear as mud
Example – Your explanation is as clear as mud.
As blue as ocean
Example – Today the sky is as blue as ocean.
Like peas in a peapod
Example – Tom and Sam are like two peas in a peapod.
Flat as a pancake
Example – My model of a volcano is as flat as a pancake now that you’ve sat on it.
As bright as a button
Example – He was as bright as a button.
As fresh as a daisy
Example – Today I am feeling as fresh as daisy.
