Idioms/Phrases starting with letter C

Call the shots – प्रभावी होना एवं लोगों को निर्देश देना
Example – Despite being junior to many, he calls the shots in the company.
Carrot and stick – प्रोत्साहन (अच्छे काम के लिए) और दंड (बुरे काम के लिए)
Example – To raise tax collection only punitive action will not do; the government will have to adopt a carrot and stick policy.
Carry the can – किसी और की गलती का आरोप खुद पर लेना
Example – On his mistake, Raju’s father was bent upon expelling him from the house; so I had to carry the can.
Carry the day –
Example – All the players played to their potential and India carried the day.
Carry weight – 
Example – My teacher’s advice carries weight with me.
(get) Carried off one’s feet – रोमांचित हो जाना
Example – He got carried off his feet when he was declared to have won the prize.
(on) Cloud nine – अति आनंदित
Example – After her engagement with her lover, these days she is on cloud nine.
Call in question – संदेह जताना
Example – On the exposure of a big scam in his ministry, his own party members called the integrity of the minister in question.
Call it a day – कार्य को (उस दिन के लिए) स्थगित कर देना
Example – We have already worked long; let’s call it a day.
Case in point – किसी चीज का उदाहरण
Example – Dowry death is a case in point that women are still regarded inferior to men.
Cast aspersions on – अभियोग या लांछन लगाना
Example – Politicians feel that by casting aspersions on other politicians they can win elections.
Cast pearls before swine – भैंस के आगे बीन बजाना
Example – He realised very soon that by presenting his innovative ideas to boost production before the management, he was casting pearls before swine.
Castles in the air – अव्यावहारिक या काल्पनिक योजना
Example – Don’t build castles-in-the air; always remember that only labour and patience pay.
Cat among the pigeons – परेशानी / भय का कारण
Example – These days the vigilant eyes of the media work as cat among-pigeons for the politicians.
Cat and dog life – झगडे से भरा जीवन
Example – After a few years, husband and wife start living cat and dog life.
Catch a tartar – किसी मजबूत प्रतिद्वंही से सामना होना
Example – Indian team has caught a tartar in South Africa.
Catch red handed – रंगे हाथों पकड़ना
Example – The thief was caught red handed.
Catch – 22 – विकट परिस्थिति जिसमें विकल्पों पर अमल करना मुश्किल हो
Example – Our leaders feel that taking action against Islamic fundamentalists and keeping Muslim voters happy at the same time is a Catch-22 situation.
Cause a ripple – उत्तेजना पैदा करना
Example – Not one of his insulting remarks caused a ripple on the surface of her composure.
Change colours – नर्वस हो जाना
Example – The man changed colours when I questioned him on the allocation of funds.
Chase rainbows – असंभव काम करने की कोशिश करना
Example – While making a plan, take into account your abilities and limitations; don’t try to chase rainbows.
Cheek by jowl – काफी नजदीक, सटकर
Example – We voters feel that politicians are at odds with each others; actually they are cheek by jowl.
Chequered career – उतार-चढ़ाव भरा जीवन
Example – Dhirubhai had a chequered career, from a layman to a tycoon.
Chew the cud – ध्यानपूर्वक या गहराई से विचार करना
Example – Chew the cud before starting any venture; think on all prospects
Chicken hearted – डरपोक
Example – Raghav is so chicken hearted that he starts trembling at the slightest intimidation.
Child’s play – आसान
Example – To solve this sum is a child’s play.
Chip off the old block – माता-पिता की तरह ही
Example – A child is the chip off the old block.
Class act – निपुण, गुणों में असाधारण.
Example – He is going to be the champion because among all the players he is a class act.
Clean sweep – स्पष्ट विजय
Example – India made a clean sweep in the series against England.
Cliffhanger – रोमांचक जिसमें परिणाम कया होगा अंतिम तक स्पष्ट न हो
Example – The final match between India and Pakistan was a cliffhanger.
Clinch the issue – मुद्दे को हल करना
Example – Government cannot the clinch the issue by threats; they will have to talk to the aggrieved public.
Close call/Close shave – दुर्घटना से बाल-बाल बचना
Example – The passengers of the flight had a close shave/call when airplane collided with the birds.
Close the book on – कार्रवाई या जाँच बंद कर देना
Example – The CBI closed the book on the double murder case.
Cock and bull story – झूठी कहानी, मनगढंत
Example  – The judge dismissed the evidence of the witness as a cock and bull story.
Cocksure – जरूरत से अधिक विश्वास से भरा
Example – You must be confident not cocksure of your knowledge.
Cold comfort – झूठी तसलली
Example – Father’s promise to take us on a vacation next month was a cold comfort for us.
Cold feet – कार्य को करने में आत्मविश्वास की कमी
Example – Though my preparation was good, I had cold feet before the examination.
Cold shoulder – किसी के प्रति जानबूझकर अमित्रता रखना या सहयोगी न बनना
Example – In order not to be noticed, the actress gave the new comer a cold shoulder in the party.
Collateral damage – आम लोगों या भवनों को क्षति
Example During a military attack on the terrorists’ hideouts, there is a huge collateral damage.
Come a cropper – असफल होना
Example The entire preparation for a grand party came a cropper when it started raining torrentially.
Come clean – गलती या अपराध स्वीकार कर लेना
Example – He came clean before the police.
Come down from one’s ivory towers – घमंड और अव्यावहारिकता छोड़कर व्यावहारिक दृष्टिकोण अपनाना
Example – The ministers must come down from their ivory towers to realise what percentage of their welfare schemes is actually reaching to the beneficiaries.
Come full circle – वहीं अंत होना जहाँ से शुरू हुआ था
Example – Most often any reform started with a good intention comes full circle due to vote bank politics of the leaders.
Come of age – पूर्ण विकसित होना
Example – Economic reforms in India has come of age with the introduction of the third phase of liberalisation.
Come to a head – (समस्या) चरम बिन्दु पर पहुँचना
Example – The communal tension between the two communities came to a head when someone tried to desecrate the temple.
Come to a standstill – पूरी तरह स्थगित, शिथिल या गतिहीन हो जाना
Example – The traffic of the town came to a standstill because of the demonstration of the opposition.
Come to grief – दुःख में पड़ना
Example – He will certainly come to grief if he does not leave his present friends.
Come to the crunch – निर्णायक परिस्थिति होना
Example – If it comes to the crunch, only your mettle, will come to your help.
Cook someone’s goose – किसी की योजना को बर्बाद कर देना
Example – By divulging our plan, my younger brother cooked our goose of giving a surprise gift to our parents.
Cook the books – टैक्स बचाने के लिए या गलत तरीके से पैसा कमाने के लिए झूठा एकाउंट्स बनाना
Example – Most companies cook the books to evade tax.
Cool as a cucumber – कभी मानसिक संतुलन नहीं खोने वाला या नाराज नहीं होने वाला
Example – Even in a tense situation Rahul Dravid is cool as a cucumber.
Crack of dawn – एकदम सुबह – सुबह
Example – The police conducted raid on the of the dacoits at the crack of dawn.
Crocodile tears – झूठी संवेदना या सहानुभूति
Example – We knew very well that she was shedding crocodile tears over our loss.
Cross swords – दुश्मनी मोल लेना
Example – The opposition and the government cross swords even at the matter of national importance.
Crunch time – निर्णायक क्षण
Example – When it comes to the crunch time your guts pay.
Cry for the moon – असंभव कार्य करने की सोचना
Example – With my limited means, to think of buying a house in Mumbai is crying for the moon.
Cry in wilderness – अप्रभावी प्रयास या आवाज
Example – Eloquent lamentations regarding the fate of the flora and fauna are certain to be rendered a cry in the wilderness.
Cry over spilt milk – बीते हुए काम के बारे में व्यर्थ का अफसोस करना
Example – It is no use crying over spilt milk; let’s think something to control the damage.
Cry wolf – झूठा हौवा खड़ा करना
Example – Don’t cry wolf over petty matters; people won’t believe you even when something serious happens.
Curry favour with – चापलूसी करके अपना काम निकालना
Example – Businessmen curry favour with politicians to win government contracts.
Cushy job – आरामदायक काम
Example – Don’t look for a cushy job; it will make your sharpness dull.
Cut a sorry figure – बुरा या दयनीय प्रदर्शन करना
Example – Indian team always cuts a sorry figure at foreign soils.
Cut above – तुलनांत्मक रूप से बहुत अच्छा
Example – Among all the players at present Virat Kohli is cut above the rest.
Cut both ends – पक्ष और विपक्ष दोनों में अपना मत रखना
Example – He always cuts both ends.
Cut corners – जल्दीबाजी में बिना गुणवत्ता का ध्यान रखे कोई काम करना
Example – Even if this company is growing fast, it doesn’t cut corners and that’s why, customers still believe it.
Cut no ice with – प्रभावहीन होना
Example – The empty promises of the leaders cut no ice with the voters.
Cut one’s coat according to one’s cloth – क्षमता के हिसाब से व्यवहार करना
Example – If you want to be happy, cut your coat according to your cloth.
Cut one’s teeth on – नौसिखिये की तरह सीखना /करना
Example – Whatever your age may be, you will have to cut your teeth on a new skill you wish to master.
Cut someone dead – पूरी तरह अनदेखा करना
Example – In the press conference when the journalist asked the minister about his involvement in the scam, he cut him dead.
Cut someone off without a shilling – वसीयत में किसी व्यक्ति के लिए कुछ नहीं छोड़ना
Example – The father cut the youngest son off without a shilling upon his death.
Cut the Gordian knot – किसी मुश्किल समस्या को आसानी से हल कर देना
Example – As a boss he always cuts the Gordian knot whenever any problem arises.
Cut to the quick – परेशान या नाराज हो जाना
Example – At his comment I was cut to the quick but I maintained silence.
Cutting edge – प्रगतिशील गुणों से सुसज्जित.
Example – With their cutting edge technology India IT firms are spreading their wings world wide.
Carry the ball – प्रमुख होना
Example – Some people don’t like carrying the ball because they get extra responsibilities.
Capital punishment – मृत्युदंड
Example – All the rapists in the world should be awarded capital punishment regardless of their social status.
Chink in one’s armour – एक छोटी परन्तु जानलेवा त्रुटि
Example – His anger proved to be a chink in his armour in business.
Chip on one’s shoulder – लड़ाकू व्यवहार
Example – My friend gets in a fight anywhere because she has a chip on her shoulder.
Come hell or high water – सारी कठिनाइयों के बावजूद चाहे कुछ भी हो जाए
Example – I shall always stand by you, come hell or high water.
Coloured glasses – पक्षपातपूर्ण दृष्टिकोण रखना
Example – A judge should not possess coloured glasses while giving his verdict in a case.
Couch potato – बैठकर या लेटकर समय व्यतीत करने वाला, खास कर टी वी देखने वाला
Example – My brother has become a couch potato since he has bought smart tv.
Cloak-and-dagger – गुप्तचरी / जासूसी
Example – At present age different security agencies are using different cloak-and-dagger tactics.
Cross out – किसी को सूची से बाहर करना
Example – I was crossed outright before the start of the match.
Cloven hoof – बुरा या विद्वेषजनक प्रवृत्ति
Example – You should not trust anybody blindly as one can show you the cloven hoof any time.
Creature comforts – आराम देने वाली चीजें
Example – Though the room is small but it has all creature comforts available in it.
Cut to the chase – मुख्य मुद्दे पर आना
Example – You are advised to cut to the chase while asserting your claim.
Curiosity killed the cat – अत्यधिक उत्सुकता हानिकारक है
Example – You should not be interested in others’ affairs as curiosity killed the cat.
Cut the crackle – बेकार की बातें छोड़कर जरूरी बात / काम करना
Example – Whenever the started talking among themselves, the manager ordered them to cut the crackle.
Count your chickens before they hatch – कोई काम पूरा होने से पहले जश्न की तैयारी करने लगना
Example – One should avoid counting one’s chickens before they hatch as one never knows the future.
Call a spade a spade – स्पष्ट रूप से सच्चाई बता देना
Example – Naveen is an outspoken person; he never fears calling a spade a spade.
