Conversion of Assertive Sentences to Interrogative Sentences

Assertive Sentences

Assertive Sentence states a fact, habitual action, universal truth, views  or opinion. They state, assert, or declare something. They are also called declarative sentences.

☞ They can be either negative or affirmative.

☞ It always end with a full stop or period.

Examples of Assertive Sentences

(1) The leopard is chasing the stag.

(2) Always throw the garbage in the dustbin.

(3) The lotus is a beautiful flower.

(4) The students were attending the class.

(5) My friends and I go to the beach every Sunday.

(6) Physics is an interesting subject.

(7) The crowd of people is waiting to hear the Presidents’s speech.

(8) Asha will represent her school in an inter school competition.

(9) East is the direction in which the Sun rises.

(10) My grandmother tells me interesting stories.

(11) Oliver Twist is a famous novel.

(12) The United states is a powerful country.

(13) My mother made delicious cookies.

(14) We will go for a picnic next week.

(15) He tried hard but did not succeed.

(16) Thanks for inviting us over for dinner tonight.

(17) Parul exercises for an hour every day.

(18) Many Kangaroos come out to graze at sunset.

(19) Paris is a beautiful place for vacations.

(20) The women looked at her reflection in the water.

Interrogative Sentences

An interrogative sentence is a sentence that asks a question. They can be direct or indirect. The punctuation is always a question mark (?).

There are two kinds of interrogative sentences

(a) Yes/No questions : They are those for which the answer is yes/no

(b) Wh questions : They are those that expect a detailed answer. wh” words, include “who,” “what,” “when,” “where,” “why,” “which,” “whose,” and “whom.”

Examples of Interrogative Sentences

(1) What is the capital of Russia?

(2) Do you want tea or coffee?

(3) How are you today?

(4) How do green plants make their own food?

(5) Whose slippers  are you wearing?

(6) Why are you late today?

(7) Have you brushed your teeth today?

(8) Who is cooking the delicious food?

(9) When is she going to the museum?

(10) What kind of music do you want to listen?

(11) How many languages do you speak?

(12) Did you take my book?

(13) Why are you not interested in movie?

(14) Who was with you in the meeting?

(15) What is your favourite colour?

(16) When are they arriving?

(17) Did Sheena buy a new phone?

(18) Can you lend me money?

(19) Have your completed your home work?

(20) Will they be here in an hour?

 

Conversion of Assertive to Interrogative

We can change an assertive sentence to the interrogative sentence in the following ways:

(1) When we change a sentence in simple present or simple past tense to the interrogative, we add the verb do/ does/ did/ am/ is/ are/ was/ were/ can/ may/ shall/ will in the same tense, before the subject and the main verb. The main verb now takes its base form.

(2) To change a sentence with a helping verb and main verb to the interrogative, we place the subject between the helping verb and the main verb.

(3) If we find the word “Never” in the assertive sentence, we will write the word “Ever” instead of that word [Never] at the time of the interrogative sentence.

(4) If we find the word “Nothing” in the assertive sentence, we will write the word “Anything” instead of that word [Nothing] at the time of the interrogative sentence.

Aux. verb + Subject + anything + Main verb + Object + Ext. ?

(5) Everybody/ Everyone/ All  →   Who – Positive
(Who + Aux. verb + not + Main verb + Object + Ext.?)

(6) Nobody/ None/ No one  → Who – Negative
Who + Aux. verb + Main verb + Object + Ext.?

• Nobody would like to be called a cruel.

• Everyone loves his own country.

• None can avoid it.

• No one can tolerate such a behaviour.
