Adjectives
Adjectives or describing words are words that modify a noun or a pronoun by describing, identifying, or quantifying words.
It normally indicates quality, size, shape, duration, feelings, contents, and more about a noun or pronoun.
For example:
(1) My mom is a pretty lady.
(2) The drawing is very beautiful.
(3) The green tree is full of flowers.
(4) Today I will eat three burgers.
(5) The elephant is very big in size.
(6) She was wearing a red shirt.
(7) The flowers smell good.
(8) There are eleven players in football team.
(9) He is a lazy man.
(10) I enjoy sleeping on my comfortable bed.
Types of Adjectives
There are 7 types of adjectives:
(1) Descriptive Adjective or attributive adjective
(2) Quantitative Adjective
(3) Numeral Adjective
(4) Demonstrative Adjective
(5) Distributive Adjective
(6) Interrogative Adjective
(7) Possessive Adjective
(1) Descriptive Adjective or attributive adjective
Descriptive adjectives are used to describe nouns and pronouns. They show the quality or kind of the noun or pronoun.
For Example:
(1) Monica is very tired today.
(2) Mohan’s drawing is amazing.
(3) The car is moving very fast.
(4) The children are hungry.
(5) The flowers have a nice smell.
(6) Rita is such a pretty girl.
(7) Sohan is a brave boy.
(8) We had a fantastic trip last year.
(9) She handed me a blue book.
(10) The big fat cat rolled over in the mud.
(2) Quantitative Adjective
It describes the number or quantity of noun or pronoun.
Some examples include all, no, few, many, any, some, each, either, every ,whole, sufficient, most,none and little.
For Example:
(1) I have only few balloons to decorate the room.
(2) There are ten pencils in my box.
(3) Ron has many clothes in his almirahs.
(4) I have got a little money for new dress.
(5) Most of the people i know are good in nature.
(6) Can you please lend me some money?
(7) Four girls are participating in school function.
(8) I do not have any chocolates in my bag.
(9) There is enough juice for my breakfast.
(10) That sentence just doesn’t make any sense.
(3) Numeral adjective
A numeral adjective is an adjective that tells us about how many or how much or in what order the noun is in.
There are three kinds of numeral adjectives: Definite numeral adjectives, indefinite numeral adjectives and distributive numeral adjectives.
(a) Definite numeral adjectives use cardinal (numbers used in an amount) and ordinals (numbers used as an order).
(b) Indefinite numeral adjectives : They indicate an indefinite number. Examples are: some, many, few, all, no, several etc.
(c) Distributive numeral adjectives: In a sentence when the words such as each, every, neither, either are used to describe then it is known as a distributive numeral adjective.
For example:
(1) The third man was sitting over there.
(2) He bought ten pencils from market.
(3) There are few children in the class.
(4) There is no garbage in the bin.
(5) I wrote many letters to you.
(6) Every child is special.
(7) I have bought some mangoes from the market.
(8) Most of the students are intelligent.
(9) Either of the method is wrong.
(10) My hand has five fingers.
(4) Demonstrative Adjective
Demonstrative adjective are used to identify or express the relative position of a noun.Some common demonstrative adjectives are this, that, these, those .
The demonstrative adjective in a sentence will come just before a noun or pronoun and tell you which one it is specifically modifying.
Examples:
(1) Can you please give me that red colour pen.
(2) That flower is very beautiful.
(3) This is my favourite dress.
(4) This is my watch.
(5) Those apples are rotten.
(6) These people are new in our area.
(7) These shoes are more comfortable.
(8) Those are your books.
(9) He lives in this house.
(10) That is a kite.
(5) Distributive Adjective
An Adjective which is used to refer each and every person or things separately or describe specific member out of a group is called Distributive Adjective.
They include each, either, neither, every, any ,one, both etc.
Examples:
(1) Each boy was gives a book.
(2) Either you will go to the market or i will.
(3) We should wash our hands after every meal.
(4) There are beautiful flowers on either side of road.
(5) Can any one please switch off the fan.
(6) Every one should take care of their parents.
(7) She watch that cartoon every day.
(8) Each hand has five fingers.
(9) Neither answer was correct.
(10) Neither of you are allowed in this class.
(6) Interrogative Adjective
Interrogative Adjective modifies noun or pronoun and ask questions too.
They are used with nouns to ask questions such as what, whose, where, why, how and which.
Examples:
(1) Which dresses are you buying today?
(2) Whose car will they give us?
(3) What dessert would you like?
(4) What is your question?
(5) When did he get married?
(6) Which is the largest river in India?
(7) Whose books shall i borrow?
(8) What a beautiful place is this?
(9) What ingredient did you choose to make this dish?
(10) What show are you watching?
(7) Possessive Adjective
A word that indicates the possession of the noun to a person/a few people.
The possessive adjectives are my, our, your, his, their, her, and its.
Examples:
(1) I am looking after her baby.
(2) My mother is a very intelligent and kind.
(3) I do not want to talk to your brother.
(4) Our father told us to do all the work.
(5) It is his bicycle.
(6) Why didn’t you clean your room?
(7) The students of class seven submitted their assignment.
(8) The blue car is my brother’s; the red car is mine.
(9) The chameleon can change its color.
(10) How old is your sister.
