Question 3 What is menstrual flow?

Menstruation
When a girl child is born, her ovaries contain thousand of immature egg which are contained in immature follicles.
When a girl reaches puberty, then one follicle develops at a time to form mature egg.
On maturing follicle bursts and egg shoot out of ovary. The release of egg from an ovary is called ovulation. It place on 14 day of beginning of menstrual cycle.
Before every ovulation, inner lining of uterus become thick and soft with lot of blood vessels in it.
a)If the egg gets fertilised by sperm, then the uterus has to keep this fertilised egg for further development and supply it with food and oxygen.
b)If the egg does not fertilised by sperm, the thick and soft uterus lining having blood vessels is not required. The unfertilised egg dies within a day and uterus lining also break down.

The breakdown and removal of inner, thick and soft lining of uterus along with its blood vessels in the form of vaginal bleeding is called Menstrual flow or menstruation or periods.

Menstruation occur if an egg released by ovary does not fertilised due to non-availability of sperm at time of ovulation.
