Question 5. Write any two properties of a magnet.
Answer The two properties of magnet are:
1) Opposite poles of two magnet attract each other while like poles of two magnet repel each other.
2) A freely suspended magnet always aligns in N-S direction.
Question 6. Where are poles of a bar magnet located?
Answer The poles of bar magnet are located at its two end points.
Question 7. A bar magnet has no markings to indicate its poles. How would you find out near which end is its north pole located?
Answer A freely suspended bar magnet always come to rest in the North-South direction. The north facing end of magnet is its north pole and the south facing end of magnet is its south pole.
Question 8. You are given an iron strip. How will you make it into a magnet?
Answer Take an iron strip and place it on the table. Now take a bar magnet and place one of its poles near one edge of the strip of iron. Without lifting it, move it along the length of the iron strip till you reach the other end. Now lift the magnet and bring the pole to the same point of the strip from where you began. Repeat the same process for about 40-50 times. Now you have made the iron strip to act as a magnet. To verify, bring some iron fillings near the iron strip. The strip will attract the fillings just like a magnet.
Question 9. How is a compass used to find directions?
Answer A compass needle always point towards the North-South direction. The red arrow of the compass needle indicate the north pole. If we know the north direction , then we can find all other three directions at that place.
