Let’s Get Started

Read the given sentences and underline the joining words. Then, circle the words, phrases or clauses they join. (Page 75) 

1) She is a rare combination of wealth and humility.

Words – Wealth, humility

2) We may visit you in the morning or in the evening.

Phrases –  in the morning, in the evening

3) I liked the film very much, so watched it twice.

Clause – I liked the film very much, watched it twice

4) I went home early because I was tired.

Clause – I went home early, I was tired

A) Fill in the blanks using suitable coordinating conjunctions. (Page 75) 

1. We have planned a week-long trip in May; shall I book the tickets for the first week or the second? (for, or, and)

2. I’d prefer to go on holiday only in the third week but are you free? (and, so, but) 

3. You have submitted the assignment pretty late, but I’ll accept it this time. (but, and ,or) 

4. We listened to him, for he was wise. (so, for, and) 

5. She does not want to have lunch, nor does she want anything to drink. (nor, but, or) 

6. They were hungry, so they decided to have an early dinner. (yet, so, but) 

7. Her two favourite pastimes are trekking and reading. (for , or , and) 

B) Fill in the blanks with appropriate conjunctions. (Page 77) 

1. If you can meet me on Tuesday, I will give you the book.

2. We bought our new books and our uniforms.

3. He got very good grades yet he is unhappy.

4. You can choose to buy the red or the green purse; both are of the same price.

5. Why don’t you read a book while waiting for your friends arrive?

6. I can wait till you finish.

7. He will forgive you because he is a kind man.

8. Do not go out untill the rain stops.

9. Eat your carrots and peas; else you will not get the ice cream.

C) Fill in the blanks with the most suitable conjunctions. (Page 77,78) 

1. She has not spoken to me since she left the colony. (for, since, when)

2. The lights went off as soon as the thunder struck. (as soon as, as well as, whenever) 

3. You cannot interview the painter for the second magazine unless you meet him in person. (unless, if, although)

4. You can come when you are free. (after, before, when)

5. Keep trying until you succeed. (while, until, after) 

6. You will have to book the ticket now, else the seat will go to someone else. (but, else, unless)

7. You cannot understand our problems because you have never lived here. (though, while, because)

8. I did not realize that I had made a mistake until you told me. (when, until, unless)

9. It is terribly hot today; unless it is necessary, don’t go out. (if, but, unless)

10. Scarcely had I reached home when it started raining. (when, than, before) 

D) Rewrite the sentences using the given conjunctions. (Page 78) 

1) She was very upset but she did not cry. (Although) 

1) Although she was very upset, she did not cry.

2) Unless you speak up, we can’t hear you. (if) 

2) If you do not speak up, we can’t hear you.

3) Both Ramesh and Suresh attended the interview. ( as well as) 

3) Ramesh as well as Suresh attended the interview.

4) We are both tired and hungry. (not only ……but also) 

4) We are not only tired but also hungry.

5. You won’t find the books if you don’t search properly. (unless) 

5. You won’t find the books unless you search properly.

6. I read a book and waited for him. (while) 

6. I read a book while I waited for him.

7. I don’t know their phone number, so I cannot call them. (for) 

7. I cannot call them for I don’t know their phone number.
