Question 8 How will classify the solutions?
Solution
The substance which is dissolved in a liquid to make a solution is called SOLUTE.
The liquid in which solute is dissolved is called SOLVENT.
For Example : Salt Solution(Salt and water)
Salt is a solute and water is a solvent.
Solute particles are lesser in amount and are called dispersed particles.
Solvent particles are greater in amount and are called dispersed medium.
The solutions made by dissolving various solute in water are called as AQUEOUS Solution.
The solutions made by dissolving various solute in organic liquids(alcohol, acetone, carbon tetrachloride etc.) are called NON-AQUEOUS Solution.
Solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.
For Example : Sugar solution, salt solution, Alloys, Sea water, Copper Sulphate solution, Alcohol and water, Soda Water, Soft Drinks etc.
These solution are called as true solution because the particles are mixed so well with solvent that we cannot distinguish one from the other.
Properties of Solution
1)A solution is a homogeneous mixture.
2)The size of solute particle is very small i.e. less than 1 nm.
3)The particle of a solution cannot be seen even with a microscope.
4)The particle of a solution can pass through filter paper.
5)A solution cannot be separated by filtration.
6)The particles of solute present in solution do not separate out on keeping.
7)A solution does not scatter a beam of light passing through it as particles are very very small.
Types of Solution
For Example : Alloys-brass (Cu +Zn)
2) SOLID IN LIQUID
For Example : Sugar Solution, Tincture of iodine(iodine in alcohol)
3) LIQUID IN LIQUID
For Example : Vinegar (water + ethanoic acid)
4) GAS IN LIQUID
For Example : soda water (carbon dioxide and water)
5) GAS IN GAS
For Example : Air
